How Often Should You Visit Your Local Optometrist?

eye exam

Everyone knows that it is a good idea to go to your primary care doctor every year for your yearly physical exam. But what about your eyes? Can you think of any reason why your eyes deserve less? At Eye and Contact Lens Center in Kirkland, Dr. Golitz provides the quality eye care you need to protect your eye health for years to come.

Routine Eye Exams

Getting your eyes examined by your local optometrist is important for the health of your eyes. Every member of your family needs to get eye exams just not necessarily on the same schedule. For young children, an eye exam before the age of three is suggested, and then a comprehensive eye exam before starting school. After that, if no vision or eye issues are discovered, every two years is a good schedule to get into.

At about age 40, you should have another comprehensive exam and the results of that exam will determine whether you will need a yearly exam, or remain on a two-year schedule. After 40, you may begin to see some changes in your vision, and it may need to be followed more closely.

At 60 years of age, you should have a yearly exam for your eyes. It is after this age that many of the more serious age-related eye issues may become more evident. Things like cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration may develop.

Health and Your Eyes

If you have health conditions, they can affect your eyes, and you need to have more frequent exams. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or an autoimmune disease, these can all seriously impact your vision and the overall health of your eyes. How frequently you need to visit your local optometrist depends a lot on your general health and your vision, but honestly, yearly visits are usually the best course of action.
