Refractive Errors

What are Refractive Errors?

Refractive errors are vision problems caused by the way light enters the eye. Refractive errors are typically diagnosed during an eye exam but many people will notice the symptoms on their own. Usually, refractive errors cause blurred vision. Some people may also have issues seeing details such as printed words.

Types of Refractive Errors

There are different types of refractive errors:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness): Objects are clear when up close but objects in a distance begin to blur
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness): Objects are blurry when up close but sharp and clear and a distance
  • Presbyopia (loss of near vision with age): Age-related myopia that begins to occur after the age of 40
  • Astigmatism (blurred vision at all distances): All-around lack of clarity which may be exacerbated in the dark

Most refractive errors can be fixed with the use of prescription corrective glasses or contact lenses. In some cases, people may also be candidates for corrective eye surgery such as the well-known LASIK procedures. Our eye doctor will assess your condition to determine the best method for correcting your refractive error.
